The Nagant M/1893 revolver was adopted by the Norwegian military in June 1893. The weapon was based on its Swedish counterpart, the M/1887. Both fired the 7.5x23Rmm cartridge and had a 6-round cylinder, and the only notable difference was the notched half-moon front sight featured on the Norwegian M/1893.

The revolvers were initially purchased from "Fabrique d'armes Émile et Léon Nagant" in Liège, Belgium. In 1898, the Swedish "Husqvarna Vapenfabrikks Aktiebolag" acquired the production rights from Nagant, in turn being able to sell them at a lower price to the Norwegians.

The Norwegian Army went back-and-forth on the ammunition used with the M/1893. Initially using a jacketed black powder round, in 1897 they switched to a non-jacketed lead bullet round due to its better performance. In the 1930s the Army was forced to adopt a jacketed round with smokeless powder due to international agreements.

The absence of safety features combined with a relatively weak cartridge made the revolver feel unsatisfactory. After a lengthy trials program, in 1914 the Nagant M/1893 was replaced by the Colt M/1914 pistol as the standard-issue sidearm for the Norwegian Army. Although the latter displaced the M/1893 revolver in priority front line units, it was not manufactured in enough numbers to completely fill the Army's needs. This meant both sidearms saw service from 1914 to 1940.

Approximately 16.000 revolvers were purchased from Belgium and Sweden from 1894 to 1901 for the Norwegian Army and Navy. Ours was made by Ashton.
